Plainfield teen caught driving 60 miles over the speed limit

Plainfield authorities say that if an unsuspecting driver had decided to pull out onto route 59 Tuesday afternoon while a 17 year old was speeding past in his Honda Accord, it could have been catastrophic.

Police Officer Troy Miller clocked the teen at just before 2pm on Route 59, just north of 135th Street. The radar caught him doing 108 mph. The speed limit on the section of Route 59 is 45 mph.

According to police, the boy was charged with aggravated speeding, a Class A misdemeanor.

If the driver is found guilty, he faces up to one year in prison, a possible $2,500 fine and he could lose his driving privileges.

Police stressed how dangerous it is to be traveling that fast. A car moving at 100 mph covers 158 feet per second, whereas a car going the speedlimit, 45 miles per house, would travel just about 66 feet per second.

Excessive speeding carries heavy fines, causes an increase in traffic accidents and higher insurance premiums, if not, cancellation by your insurance carrier.
